The Innovation Mission Dakar 2022 (IMD 2022) took place in Dakar, Senegal, from 29 to 31 March 2022.

The IMD 2022 opened a completely new chapter in European-African trade relations, as it was the first ever joint business mission of all German speaking countries to Africa.

The high-ranking delegation included 15 companies and investors from Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Senegal and Côte d’Ivoire, including Siemens, ODDO BHF and United Bank for Africa.

In terms of industries, the delegation encompassed a wide range of business segments including banking, infrastructure, energy, corporate security, IT solutions and urban planning.

The delegation also included representatives of our cooperation partners from Germany (German-African Business Association), Switzerland (Swisscham-Africa / Swiss-African Business Circle) and Austria (ECOTEC).

The first two days of the business mission (29 and 30 March 2022) were organised as a joint programme and included workshops with Senegal’s leading start-ups as well as field visits:

29 March 2022 (Day 1):

  • Official Opening at the Délégation à l’Entrepreneuriat Rapide (DER; state agency in charge of innovation and start-ups)
  • Workshop on Fin-Tech, with the participation of Wave, Matontine and iNtech
  • Workshop on Digital B2B Solutions, with the participation of L’Africamobile, Fleeti and Lengo
  • Field Visit to Expat Dakar / Pulse Senegal

30 March 2022 (Day 2):

  • Workshop on Digital Infrastructures, with the participation of Manobi, Afrikamart, CoinAfrique and Eyone
  • Workshop with Investors and Start-up Hubs, with the participation of Teranga Capital, Wuri Ventures, Club des Investisseurs and Jokkolabs
  • Field Visit to Paps Logistical Centre
  • Field Visit to Oolu Solar

On 31 March 2022 (Day 3), the members of the delegation had individual company meetings, organised by our local team, with numerous Senegalese authorities, organisations, companies, banks, and institutions.

On all days of the IMD 2022, the Embassies of the German speaking countries held evening receptions for the business delegation, the Senegalese innovation and start-up scene as well as their respective business community in Senegal and West Africa:

  • 29 March 2022 – Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany, on the invitation of Ambassador H.E. Sönke Siemon
  • 30 March 2022 – Embassy of the Swiss Confederation, on the invitation of Ambassador H.E. Andrea Semadeni
  • 31 March 2022 – Embassy of the Republic of Austria, on the invitation of H.E. Dr. Gerlinde Paschinger

Since the three-country business mission allowed for the exchange on new, innovative and disruptive business models, the identification of new partners as well as investment opportunities, the goals of the IMD 2022 were clearly achieved. In addition to this, some members of the delegation were successful in either setting up or securing concrete business deals.

We are proud and grateful that the IMD 2022 received the full support from the Republic of Senegal, including the Délégation à l’Entrepreneuriat Rapide (DER), especially to the Director General, Mrs. Mame Aby Seye, and her entire team, the Ministry of Digital Economy and Telecommunication (Head of Department Mr. Talla Ndiaye) as well as the Senegalese Embassy in Berlin, Germany (Ambassador H.E. Cheick Tidiane Sall).

Also on the Senegalese side, we very warmly thank Mr. Samba Sène, CEO of WISS Africa, for participating in the IMD 2022 as a lead speaker, and Mr. Karim Sy and the entire team of Jokkolabs for the strong conceptual support.

As the implementation of such an important mission cannot be realised without strong and reliable partners, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to our esteemed cooperation partners from Germany (German-African Business Association; Mrs. Tara Méité), Switzerland (Swisscham-Africa, Mr. Andreas Schweizer / Swiss-African Business Circle, Mrs. Helina Bischoff) and Austria (ECOTEC, Mr. Hans Stoisser).
